I can't believe that has been a whole year since I started this blog! And man has it been eventful! I've had my ups and downs; change after change, but believe me when I say that Hay Queen! is here to stay. But not only stay, but grow. Here's what I learned in my first year of blogging.
This is my website.
So it's my journey, no one else's. Yes, Hay Queen! will ultimately expand to be a social platform for all women of color to share their experiences within beauty, life and career; but at the end of the day this entire site is my creation made after my vision. I had to remind myself of this constantly throughout this first year to make sure I wasn't constantly comparing HQ! to other blogs. HQ! is my baby, and I love her for the qualities she possesses now, and for what she'll grow into in the future.
It's okay to get a little personal.
It's crazy how I'm just now learning that the more personal that I get with my blogging, the more readers I gain. At the beginning of HQ!, I only included personal stories about my hair journey and beauty regimen, but now I include really personal things including my relationships, career moves and personal rants. I have to remind myself that HQ! is my safe place, as well as my readers. I can't wait to continue to grow with you all!
Consistency is key.
This seems like a no-brainer, but it's easier said than done. A lot of times life gets in the way and I forget about blogging. But I've made up my mind that if I want this to continue being a growing career for me, then I need to start treating it like one. I now set deadlines for myself, and make sure I'm giving you all frequent content so all have posts to look forward too!
Collaborating is a beautiful thing.
For this particular photo set I collaborated with fellow KC blogger, Ms. GingerWild! We're high school friends who have recently reconnected over our love for beauty and blogging. Her site is inspiring and insightful (definitely make sure you head over to her site). We both decided to style black denim in similar, but different ways. I'm more of a free-flowing fashionista a.k.a. I put on whatever feels comfortable, and Ms. GingerWild is more fierce!
This is a prime example of how collaboration can create a beautiful end project. I started collaborating with more bloggers and writers towards the end of my first year, and I definitely plan to collaborate a lot more! In the world of blogging it's so hard to distinguish competition from future collaborators, BUT only if you allow it to. I make sure I listen to my gut when it comes to this. Those who have similar interests and work ethic are usually the easiest for me to collaborate with. Know your work ethic, and know what kind of vibes you can handle.
Humility and gratitude are my holy grails.
Because humility makes you listen and take note. And gratitude leads to reflection and passion. I know how far I've come personally, and I know how much further I can go. The same goes for HQ! I do not take the passion and talent I have for writing lightly, I'm grateful that God has given the opportunity and the platform to share my story, and to provide a platform for others to share theirs. This has been one friggin' amazing year queens! Here's to more to many more!
Special thanks to Ms. GingerWild for this collaboration! Be sure to show her blog some love!
