I am currently 14 months into my loc journey! *commences happy dance* And a common question that I have been receiving is: How do you protect your hair? And the answer is, through protective styling. Say what? You can do protective styling with locs? Why yes, of course you can. My go-to protective style are Havana twists!
I've done this protective style three times since starting my locs, and haven't regretted it at all. Not only does it give me a break from seeing my hair the same, but I'm protecting my hair from harsh elements such as, my hands (lol), clothing and weather. I also love the idea that it enables me to play with length.
I know in the past I have worn wigs as a sense of protective styling, but as my locs grew denser wigs just haven't been an option. Which is fine, because wearing Havana twists as a protective style have allowed my scalp to still breathe and thrive even though my locs are somewhat covered.
I definitely it's worth giving a try if you are looking for a break from your locs. I will advise, however, to wait at least after eight months after you begin your locs to avoid flattening, or unraveling. I made the mistake of putting Havana twists in my hair prematurely during my first set of locs and my hair looked a hot mess, which caused me to take my locs down. Just wait it out for your locs to gain density.
But definitely give them a try!
