My name is Alyssia', although I prefer to be called Lee. I am from the Newport News/Hampton area. I am currently a SAHM (stay at home mom), I have two boys at the ages of 7 & 2 and I have been married for 7 years to my best friend. While being a stay at home mom, I am homeschooling my oldest who just started second grade. Right now, that's the most important job I can have at this point in my life.
How long have you been natural? How long have you been locked?
I've been natural a total of 7 years & I've will be officially locked 4 years in October.
Why did you decide to loc your hair?
I decided to loc my hair because I have always admired those who had them, and once my mind was made up...I just went for it! They represent such beauty and strength to me, and after nagging my little sister about it..I just did it. I was sitting at my mom's dining room table and immediately started putting my hair in two strands twists. (that's how I started)
How did your friends/family react to you locking your hair?
Thankfully, my family didn't see it as strange or weird, they were very supportive! I've done some of everything to my hair since I was 12 years old, so locs wasn't any different to them lol. I know my little sister, Tia was very pivotal in my choice because she would be the one who I always shared my hair ideas with. Initially, I wanted to be a cosmetologist so she was my model to try out new ideas. I'm thankful for her putting up with me lol. Of course my husband was all for it, he loves locs and definitely loves mine.
What is your hair regimen? Favorite hair products?
My hair regimen in the beginning was pretty complicated- only because I wanted to try EVERY new thing that came out. Now that some time has gone by, I realize that less is more for me. My routine now is washing with V05 clarifying shampoo (when I feel it's necessary), using a water based conditioner or oil, like coconut oil, or a coconut oil deep condition pack (my hair can get severely dry) and using a light oil mist- which is my favorite product of all time!! (Bonner Brothers Tropical Roots Growth Stimulating Oil). I try to keep the products to a minimum to avoid build-up or heaviness.
How does locs affect your career/lifestyle?
Having locs definitely changed my sense of style and gave me great confidence. I was pretty caught up in looking like everyone else....but once I locked my hair.....I found that nothing was the same (Drake's voice) lol. My wardrobe, my makeup choices, taking better care of myself really came into play. I feel more connected with my true self and I'm loving who I'm becoming.
What is your favorite locstyle or protective style?
My favorite locstyle right now are the big curls created with pipe cleaners. I've been loving the carefree curls for the past couple of months. I have been giving myself a break from maintenance this summer just to promote growth, and I find that my curls come out the best with wild roots :) I retain length this way and my edges are still here so that's a good sign lol. As far as moisture, because it's been blazing hot, I just spritz my hair with a mixture of oil and water. I've been keeping my regimen as simple as possible.
What advice can you give those who are thinking about locking their hair?
If I were to give advice to those thinking about locs, I would say it's great to have inspiration and dreams of what you want them to look like....but understand that it is a process and it won't be pretty all the time. It takes commitment, patience, and confidence to start. Research, watch Youtube vids (this is how I learned so much), do a consultation with a locticion. Just make yourself aware of all your options. Everyone won't agree with your choice and that's fine, but its your hair, your head...Rock it!!!
Would you like to add anything else?
I am so grateful for the opportunity to talk about my locs and give people knowledge about them. I maintained them myself and have messed up a lot along the way but that's what life is all about....learning.
