What is your name, where are you from, and what do you do?
My name is Brie Daniels. I’m from Arlington, TX and I am a business owner whose focus is social media and email marketing as well as web design.
How long have you been natural?
I have been natural for 1 year, 6 months, 2 weeks and three days as of December 4, 2014.
What made you go natural?
I studied abroad during the fall semester of my senior year and had a curly sew-in during my time over there. Once I got back, it was really hard seeing myself with straight hair, it lacked the volume that I had gotten used to and I didn’t like that.
How did your friends/family react to you going natural?
My sister really liked it. My parents just recently got on board once they saw that I could do anything to my hair that someone with relaxed hair could do.
What is your hair regimen? Favorite hair products?
It’s terrible but I don’t have a hair regimen. I do try to wash my hair every couple of weeks but that can be hit or miss depending on whether or not I’m traveling. I really like the Cantu line, especially their detangling spray. It smells so good and makes my hair really soft!
How does your hair affect your career/lifestyle?
I work for myself so I’d say my career/lifestyle affect my hair more than my hair affects my career/lifestyle. I feel like I’m always on the go so a good protective style is everything when i need it.
What is your favorite hairstyle, or protective style?
I really loved my Senegalese twists that I had earlier this year. I’m thinking of getting those again soon.
How do you manage to retain length? Moisture?
My hair shrinks like nobody’s business so it’s really hard to tell whether or not it’s growing. As far as moisture is concerned, when I feel like my hair is really dry, I do a deep conditioner. I’ve typically gotten the best results from using 1/4 cup of honey and 1/4 cup of olive oil mixed together. It makes my hair really shiny and my scalp loves it too.
What advice can you give to those who are thinking about going natural?
I would say to do you boo! It’s all about what you like. Don’t do it because it’s on trend right now or because people around are pressuring you. Also, know that it is work and it takes research to really find the things that work best for your hair once you are natural. If that sounds like a worthwhile thing to you then I say go for it! I’ve had weaves, braids, relaxers and twists and the common theme amongst all of them was that they were perfect for that specific season in my life. Also remember, no matter what you choose, it isn’t permanent! It’s just hair love. If the maintenance gets to be too much you can just relax it :).
Would you like to add anything else?
Whether your hair is natural, relaxed or shaved completely off know that you are beautiful and everything from the crown of your head to the soles of your feet was hand-crafted by a God whose bigger than both you and me.
