What is your name, where are you from, and what do you do?
My name is Angel Jackson, and I am from Maryland/ Washington, DC, but my husband and our family currently reside in Atlanta, GA. I am a wife, stay at home mommy, and entrepreneur. I have my own health, beauty and wellness business, where I offer a variety of amazing all natural, plant based products, and also, help others start and maintain successful businesses as well! I am a content creator on Youtube, and I home school my children.
How long have you been natural? How long have you been locked?
I have been natural since November 2009, so almost 7 years now! I birthed my locs on December 29, 2015, and I’ve been loving the journey ever since!
Why did you decide to loc your hair?
I decided to loc my hair because although I was natural, I still wasn’t satisfied with my hair. My hair took up too much of my time, and I was tired of having to wet my hair everyday just for it to look nice or to be moisturized. I had done so much to my hair throughout the years prior to me starting my locs. I colored it multiple colors, cut it into multiple styles, etc. Deep down, I was discontent with my image, and struggling with low self esteem. When I made the decision to loc my hair, it was birthed out of a place of loving myself in what I considered my purest form. When I went natural, I was in high school, and still had to deal with everyone’s opinions about what I did. Now, I am a grown married woman, so it was even more liberating not to have to be bombarded with others opinions, with the exception of my husband, who is the most supportive of my journey!
How did your friends/family react to you locking you hair?
My husband and my best friend were extremely supportive and rooted me on! I didn’t share with many people that I was going to loc my hair. After I did it was when everyone found out! Many people were “shocked,” but everyone was so excited for me! I got great responses from my family and my friends.
What is your hair regimen? Favorite hair products?
One thing that I love about my loc journey is that I keep it simple! I don’t really have a regimen per say. I just recently switched a few things up to help my locs continue to progress, so now I am getting my locs retwisted every 4 weeks instead of every 6.5-9 weeks. I have my locs maintained by my stylist until they fully mature. She uses an all natural product for my retwist that does absolute wonders for my locs, and doesn’t cause build up! Unfortunately, it’s by a private company, and I can’t even get my hands on it! It’s amazing though, and I don’t use products in my hair in between my retwist! I keep my hair moisturized by oiling my scalp when needed, and tying my hair up every night with a satin scarf/loc soc!
How does your hair affect your career/lifestyle?
My locs have made my life so much easier and fulfilling! I am able to spend more time with my family, and less time in the bathroom! I literally just get up and go for the most part! My hair journey actually led me to start my Youtube channel “Natural Nirvana,” which is where I document my journey, share my ups and downs, and give tips, tutorials, and encouragement! Since I fully run my own health and wellness business, and don’t have a boss, I don’t have any guidelines to adhere to! It’s very freeing and fulfilling! My locs have made my life simpler and more enjoyable!
What is your favorite loc style or protective hair style?
I currently wear my locs down 98 percent of the time! I love allowing them to be free without much manipulation or tension. As my locs continue to grow, I will probably play around with buns and curls, but for now, I just let them hang!
How do you manage to retain length/moisture?
I manage to retain length and moisture by drinking plenty of water, trying to maintain a well balanced diet, oiling my scalp with all natural oils when needed, and tying my hair up every night. I’m very excited because I’m about to embark on a 90 day hair growth challenge while taking my all natural hair, skin and nail vitamins! If any of you ladies would like to join me on the hair growth challenge, please reach out to me via email at firstname.lastname@example.org!
What advice can you give those thinking about locking their hair?
Make sure that you are doing this for you! This is your journey, and if your motives are to please people, you won’t be satisfied. Embrace and love your hair in every stage, and only speak positive affirmations over your hair! Avoid using products that will cause build up, and do your research! Most importantly, don’t compare your loc journey to anyone else’s, but instead, create your own! I have several videos on my Youtube channel that give great advice and tips for anyone considering locs or for anyone who is newly loc’d.
