Coconut oil has been having a moment for some time now. It's a staple in Youtube beauty videos, cooking tutorials, hair regimens and even dental routines. But what makes coconut oil so special? Well if you have absolutely no idea, or want to know of more ways you can use this magical oil, keep reading!
#1 Deep Conditioner
For my loose naturals or for those with straight hair, coconut oil works wonders as deep conditioner- not to mention, usually a cheaper option. When I was a loose natural I would drench my hair with water and then apply a handsome amount of coconut oil to my scalp and hair, and leave on my hair for hours. After washing the oil out, my curls were luscious and my shine was beautiful!
#2 To alleviate allergy symptoms
This is another trick that I have yet to try, mainly because my allergies aren't too severe. But many coconut oil enthusiasts report that if you rub coconut oil on the inside of your nose, it will help soother your allergy symptoms.
#3 Energy Supplement
Because it contains a different form of saturated fats (medium-chain triglycerides), coconut oil may be able to give you the energy boost that you need. Try spreading warm coconut oil on your toast in the morning, in place of butter to start your day with a boost!
#4 Skin Moisturizer
Since I'm no longer using coconut oil in my hair, I've had to think of new ways to utilize my full bottle of organic coconut oil. One way is as a skin moisturizer. I don't use it everyday, but usually after I've shaved my legs. Adding coconut oil to my legs after shaving, revive my skin with all the moisture that was just stripped away. It also leaves a nice sheen on my legs- giving the illusion of a summer glow.
#5 Makeup Remover
I've recently started using coconut oil as a makeup remover, and I absolutely adore it. It melts away my makeup for the day, and is very gentle on my skin. The downside is that it takes an extra cleanse or two to break through the oil, but it still does a great job at removing my makeup.
#6 A Natural Chap Stick
I aspire to be more of a DIYer, but am not quite there. However, I have used coconut oil within body scrubs, and it left my skin supple and smooth, I imagine it will do the same to my lips. Here's a chapstick recipe you can try out!
#7 Oil Pulling
This herbal remedy is supposed to assist with detoxing your teeth and gums from bacteria. It can also act as a natural teeth whitener. Oil pulling enthusiasts take a tablespoon of coconut oil each day and swish it around their mouths from 10 to 20 minutes for overall improvement of oral health. I haven't tried this yet, but I do plan on giving it a try!
#8 Can help improve sleep
Adding a few spoons of coconut oil to your herbal tea can encourage your body to activate its sleep hormones.
#9 It's the easiest oil to store
Coconut oil is hands down the easiest oil to store. It solidifies depending on the temperature that it is in. So if your room is hot, it well be a liquid, but if you have your air conditioning blowing it'll turn into a solid. See, easy-peasy.
It's been rumored that rubbing coconut oil on your cuticles can cause stronger, healthier nails. I've stopped using coconut oil in my hair, but I do recall when I was a loose natural and using the oil in my hair, my nails were a lot more durable! It's definitely worth the try.
