What is your name, where are you from, and what do you do?
My name is Dominique Austin. I grew up a military brat so I was born in Abilene, Texas but I claim Kansas City, Missouri as home, but now I live in Dallas. I'm a student at the University of North Texas, my major is social work and my minor is in communications.
When did you start vlogging?
I started vloging my freshman year of college. Honestly, it was nothing but God that gave me the idea. I've always done well with giving advice and sharing what I may go through. So it kind of became my diary- anything I'm going through I vlog about it because I recognize that so many other females go through the same things as me. I will definitely say that the idea came from God, during my devotional time.
Where do you get inspiration for your videos?
My videos are based off of whatever I may be going through, or if I'm inspired by something, which is why I don't consistently post videos.
What is the "I Choose Me Movement?"
The I Choose Me movement is really just my testimony of me falling in love with myself. After spending about a year in a "situationship" with this guy who was all wrong for me, I realized that I lost myself. So, after a lot of devotional time and writing in my journal I started to notice how I kept writing "I'm going to choose me first." Like I said before it was nothing but God who revealed this idea to me. I also had started an organization called B.E.A.U.T.Y. in high school and would meet with girls every two weeks and discuss true beauty. I made a youtube video about that experience and from there I was invited to speak at a youth conference and was offered an internship with an organization called Power Forward Woman. But, after experiencing the stress of life and family problems I stopped doing all of that and was very unmotivated. I experienced a minor depression and really lost faith in God, so when I started I Choose Me it was not only about loving me, but it was also about loving myself enough to keep God at the center of my life. I didn't want to allow the distractions of the world to pull me away from my destiny. So, after all of that I decided to make an Instagram page that would also inspire other young women to choose me. Everything I post on the page is things that are helping me to continue to fall in love with myself.
How did this become a movement?
I call it a movement because I want it to become contagious. Many females sit around and complain about not having a "bae," or spend most of their time chasing after some boy who's not even for them. In the midst of all of that, they don't realize that they don't even love their self. So, I would like "I Choose Me" to be an example that it's okay to be happily single and saved. God will bring that man when it's time and if he hasn't brought him yet then you're not ready for your "Adam" yet.
Who in your life inspires you?
I find inspiration from so many different women, but one that definitely sticks out to me is Ashley Empowers. I met her at a Bible study I attended where she shared her testimony about her courting her now husband. I really connected with her personality, so I started watching all of her Youtube videos. She shares a lot about her experience being single and saved, as well as how to carry yourself as a women when courting. I really admire her honesty. And because she's so young, she's very relatable.
How long have you been natural?
I've been natural for about 5 years now.
What is your hair regimen?
I'm currently the protective style queen. I usually have some type of twists, braids, or sew in. Every two months I usually wear my hair out, and I'll deep condition it with apple cider vinegar and olive oil. I use various products- I'm always trying something new.
How does your hair affect your career/lifestyle?
Well as many naturals know, it's a lot of work! So, that's the main reason I stick to protective styling because it saves a lot of time and I also get bored easily with my hair so I'm trying to avoid cutting or dying it and just let it grow.
What advice would you give to your younger self?
You don't have to be perfect. You'll make mistakes and fall on your face a few times, but I promise it will make you stronger.
Where can we find more information about the "I Choose Me Movement?"
